Fundraising £9,000 in under a week

Back to blog

They say that every cloud has a silver lining, and despite Covid-19 ripping its way through our economy and our lives, it has demonstrated that in times of crisis people really do pull together. Somewhere in that chaos, we recognise that we are the same. We understand that what often separates us in normal times – politics, religious beliefs, cultural differences – is but a thin veneer that can be tossed aside at any moment when our troubles converge. Yes, it is comforting in some bizarre way that when push comes to shove, we humans can work together and support each other.

Amidst some of the truly awful news of late comes a silver lining from one of our clients – Hackney Migrant Centre – who have successfully raised nearly £9,000 in one week for their Covid-19 emergency appeal.

We worked with Hackney Migrant Centre last year to build a new website complete with integrated donation-handling and the ability to quickly create donation forms for specific appeals. Here is what Ida, the centre’s fundraiser had to say:

“Having a website which is easy to use and navigate has made a real difference to our fundraising efforts during the pandemic. Due to the risk of infection and the crisis caused by Covid-19 we have had to close our services down. Many of the refugees and migrants we support are excluded from accessing mainstream benefits and are socially isolated, so the closure of services can have very dire consequences for those who depend on them. Once we realised that many of our visitors would be without food, cleaning products and other necessities during this crisis, we decided to ask the community for support so we could provide this for some of the most vulnerable migrants we work with.

Ultimately, people choose to donate because they believe in the cause, and because they want to support those who are in need. The solidarity we are seeing is amazing! To successfully raise funds quickly however, it makes a real difference to have a strong digital presence.

Because of the work that had gone into designing the website, we were able to get an appeal set up quickly and within just a week had raised more than double of what we had expected! Ultimately, people choose to donate because they believe in the cause, and because they want to support those who are in need. The solidarity we are seeing is amazing! To successfully raise funds quickly however, it makes a real difference to have a strong digital presence. A clear website with an integrated donation function is a huge part of that, along with social media and other communication channels. It’s been great to work with Charity Box on developing our website and online fundraising – it’s enabled us to respond quickly in these unprecedented circumstances.”
